Intellectual Disability
According to the Policies Governing Services for Children with Disabilities, an Intellectual Disability means significantly subaverage general intellectual functioning, existing concurrently with deficits in adaptive behavior and manifested during the developmental period, that adversely affects a child’s educational performance. The term “intellectual disability” was formerly termed “mental retardation.”
A student with an intellectual disability will typically have an IQ score of 70 or lower (with the average score being 100), and his or her adaptive behavior (functional skills) and academic scores will also show deficits in this range.
